Amazon.com Review
Junior aviators will enjoy flying the Air Hogs Switchblade, a unique remote-control plane that hovers like a UFO and flies like a jet. Designed for ages ten and older, this marvel-of-the-skies transforms in midair with the push of a "morph" button that propels it forward from a hovering position with incredible velocity. Ideal for play in a neighborhood park or spacious backyard, kids can put on a show with this remote control plane.

What We Think

Fun factor:
Durability:
Educational factor:
Novelty factor:

The Good: Plane's dual action enables it to hover like a UFO, and fly like a jet.

The Challenging: As with any remote control plane, a high-velocity flight often ends quickly.

In a Nutshell: Junior aviators will be impressed by this remote-control plane's midair transformation.

Plug the charge nozzle into the plane's charge port and the plane will be ready to fly in 30 minutes. (Black & yellow model shown here.) View larger.
Prepare for Take-Off
With a 17-inch wingspan, durable polyfoam construction, and red-and-grey designs, this remote-control plane can hover in mid-air and then transform to fly like a jet. The remote control features a throttle, direction toggle, trim knob, and "morph" button, making it easy for junior aviators to pilot the Switchblade from up to 300 feet (91 meters) away.

Before take-off, adults should install the controller/charger's eight "AA" batteries (not included), then plug the charge nozzle into the plane's charge port. In approximately 30 minutes, a flashing green light on the controller, indicates the plane is ready. First-time pilots then adjust the controller's trim knob to make the plane hover, rather than spin.

Take to the Skies like a UFO
The Switchblade is ideal for use in a neighborhood park or spacious backyard. Pilots can position the plane on the included launch base for take-off, or simply release it by hand. Arrows on the plane's body show what direction to rotate the plane's wings so that the propellers are facing opposite directions. When the trim is properly adjusted, the plane will ascend with ease.

Fly with the Stealth of a Jet Plane
The plane's steady ascension is a marvel to watch, but it hardly compares to the sudden midair transformation that takes place at the touch of the "morph" button. Instantly, the plane shoots forward with remarkable speed. From there, it's up to you to steer it safely.

The Switchblade should be piloted over grassy areas in temperatures of 45 degrees Fahrenheit or above for safe flying and optimal performance. In the event of an accidental air collision or landing mishap, a piece of tape is usually sufficient for repair.

The plane also comes with four replacement propellers which should be installed with adult supervision.

What's in the Box
Switchblade remote-control plane (Red & grey), controller/charger, controller antenna, launch base, wind speed/direction ribbon, four spare propellers, and instruction manual.

1 out of 5 stars Virtually Unusable   August 19, 2010
Susan Power (Lakeport, CA United States)
My 11 year old bought this with his birthday money, it has been the worst RC vehicle he's ever had. It's hard to use, the slightest wind knocks it down. Every time it crashed while he was learning to use it something broke. We watched the video, read the instructions, went to a large open area - it was a bust. He's tried and tried to make it work like it shows in the commercials and has never been successful for more than a few seconds.
After fewer than 5 attempts to fly it, it's broken so many times it's held together with glue. I would never buy this toy.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality and performance   July 14, 2010
Brian G Hanson
I picked this toy up, as my previous Air Hog's airplane battery quit working. This plane was never able to get higher than how high I could throw it. When in "Chopper" mode, the plane would spin and only hover about 5 feet off the ground, leaving too little space to "Morph" before crashing into the ground. When in plane mode, the plane would not ascend at all, only descend. Seemed I may have gotten one with one or two poor performing engines. I would not recommend this toy.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY (x2)   April 11, 2010

We the first switchblade that I was sent would fly straight into the ground. By this I mean if you let it fly out of your hand with 4 ft it would on the ground. Fully charge it just flies into the ground faster. So I contacted Air Hog and they sent me a phone number to call. I called and spoke to an individual that not only knew NOTHING about this item but would disappear for a minute at a time, come back and ask the same questions and then proceed to tell me that it just took time to get used to flying it. When I explained that there was no way to practice flying it because it wouldn't stay airborne for more than a second he told me I must have over-charged the batteries !?!?!?!?! After about 20 minutes of the same questions I realized that this customer service clown wasn't going to do anything for me or fix the problem.
So I sent the unit back and got a replacement. This one makes it about fifteen feet before diving into the ground. I might try to tweak it and make it work but all in all I will NEVER be purchasing another item from Air Hog! I did give it three stars for durability because when I used the helicopter feature to take it up to 30 feet and proceed to have it scream into the ground it didn't break.

For those of you that are going to comment to the effect that it's user error and this is a great product please don't waste your time. I've flown/have numerous remote control aircraft and I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. Maybe some people get ones that work, but I'm 0 for 2!

4 out of 5 stars Takes a little practice   February 14, 2010
K. Schneider (Plano, TX USA)
Definitely very exciting for my 7-yr old son -- me too. Takes a little practice to get launched! Make sure there's NO wind the first time you take it out because it makes taking off very difficult. Also, make sure you've got PLENTY of space! We went to a big open field at a park -- about 2 football fields worth of open area. That's about as small as you can manage. Definitely stay away from trees because it's a tree magnet and gets stuck easily. (Learned the hard way!)

1 out of 5 stars remote control airplane   February 12, 2010
Laurie J. Ebright (Arizona)
My Son is not very happy with the product it doesn't seem to hold a charge
very well thus it doesn't fly for very long. It is a real disappointment
I wish we could return it for him and get his money back as he is 11yrs old
and used his own money to buy it.
