Editorial Review Originally designed for the frontlines and now licensed for use in your own backyard, the AH-64D Apache helicopter offers a great introduction to radio-controlled toys. With a trigger-handle remote control that is easy to master, the tough looking black helicopter banks and flies like its much bigger cousins, hovering and accelerating under the direction of young pilots-in-training who thankfully keep both feet on the ground. The launch pad powers up the helicopter in only a few minutes, then it's straight up to the clouds (provided they're at a height of 50 feet). Move the toggle switch to adjust altitude or rotor speed control, change direction to evade other aircraft, or brake to bring the chopper down safely. With flexible landing gear and a body made of tough foam and plastic, the helicopter weathers the occasional unexpected rough landing well, with a good bounce. Even so, it's best to practice flying in an open, treeless area. This nimble chopper measures roughly 15 inches from rounded nose to tail tip (longer when rotor blades are fully extended) and includes a rechargeable battery pack. In order for the unit to get airborne, however, the controller needs six AA batteries (not included) and the charger requires eight D batteries (not included). --Heather Lyndon

a TRUE RIPOFF June 24, 2007 Douglas N. Finney Jr.
What the front box should say.
"operates for 30 seconds on a full charge and you cant steer it, just watch it go in circles for about 5 seconds untill the battery cannot spin the roter fast enough to keep it airborn!!!
First off, you cannot control the thing. It just floats, IF your lucky enough to get it off the ground. I put 8 BRAND NEW energizer batteries in the charging base and charged it twice as the manual specified. It lifted up for about 5 seconds, flew around in circles and then crashed into the grass. The manual also says that to turn it you just let off the throttle, but when you do this your helicopter comes crashing down!! The manual says you will get a whole 30 seconds of fly time which was not written on the box, (because it's pathetic). Another thing not written on the box is you cant steer it. NO ONE would buy this if they knew how it operated. For about 50 dollars more you can get a helicopter that actually works which is what i had to do..

easyest helicopter you could ever fly via RC April 2, 2006 Pierre (NJ, United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
the most important thing to know about this helicopter is that you must have good (new) D cells in the base/charger, otherwise the heli will not be able to spin the blades fast enough to generate any lift, and take off.
it's best to hold it in your hand, the first few times, and let it go when you feel it generating lift. Once you get over that hurdle, you can have it take off from grassy areas, or unsmooth road surfaces, that will not allow it to spin until it gets up enough speed to have the tail rotor counter the centrifical force.
turning it is the interesting part, just slow down on the throttle a littl, and centrifical force move the tail rotor around, and speed it up again and your flying in a new direction. its best to play with this in a no wind, or low wind area.. but it is fun.
good clean fun January 5, 2006 eshoppingjunky (georgia ,usa) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
My 8 year old recieved one of these for Christmas. He loves it it works well if you follow the directions. I think most of the other reviewers here didn't read and follow the directions, or they were expecting too much from this thing. The biggest thing to remember is this thing is very light and at the mercy of the wind. On a calm day you can control the direction of flight somewhat if you follow the directions for doing so. I would highly recommend this for younger children as a introduction to R/C flying
